Honorary members

The Utrechtse Historische Studentenkring awards the title of Honorary Member to people who have made extraordinary achievements for the association. You can find an overview below.

em. prof. jonkvrouw dr. J. M. (Johanna Maria) van Winter

Van Winter has been a professor of Middle Ages at the Institute of History and organised many excursions and city walks for students. In 1979 she became professor and she retired in 1989. Van Winter has been an Honorary member since 1967.

prof. dr. H. W. (Hermann Walther) von der Dunk (1928-2018)

Von der Dunk was praeses of the UHSK in the year 1954-1955 and has been emeritus professor of Cultural History at Utrecht University. The UHSK organises the annual Von Der Dunk lecture in honour of his contribution to the association. He has been honorary member since 2004.

mr. J. J. (Johannes Jacobus) Beyerman (1901-1982) 

Beyerman was one of the founders of the UHSK. After his study he, between 1934 and 1966, worked as a city archivist in Dordrecht. He has published a number of books about Dordrecht, such as De historische schoonheid van Dordrecht (1943) and Dordrecht in oude ansichten (1967).

prof. dr. C. D. J. (Coenraad Dirk Jan) Brandt (1897-1966)

As an extraordinary professor in the History of the Twentieth Century, he was affiliated with the History Institute of Utrecht University. Here he made the study of contemporary history a university discipline for the first time.

prof. dr. P. C. A. (Pieter Catharinus Arie) Geyl (1887-1966)

Geyl was a professor of General and Patriotic History after the Middle Ages at Utrecht University from 1936 to 1958. His best-known work is De Geschiedenis van de Nederlandsche stam, which consists of six volumes that were published between 1930 and 1962.

drs. M. A. M. (Margreet) van Brink (1926-2011)

A lot of archive material from the 40s and the daily life of the association have been preserved thanks to Margreet van Brink. Van Brink has also started the education of the Russian language in the Netherlands. In 2007 she became an honorary member.

prof. dr. B.H. (Bernard Hendrik) Slicher van Bath (1910-2004)

Slicher van Bath was professor of Social and Economic History in Groningen and extraordinary professor of Agricultural, Economic and Social History in Wageningen.

dr. dom. A. J. A. (Arnoldus) Smits OSB (‘Father Smits’) (1914-2005)

Studied at the History Institute in the 1940s and was an active UHSK member. Under the direction of Pieter Geyl, he obtained his PhD at the University of Utrecht in 1950 with a dissertation entitled De scheuring van het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de houding van het Vlaamse land in 1830. "Father Smits" has been an honorary member since 1951.

prof. dr. T.S. (Taeke Sjoerd) Jansma (1904-1992)

Jansma was one of the founders of the UHSK in 1926. In 1932 he obtained his PhD in Utrecht, one of his friends - and co-founder of the UHSK - J.J. Beyerman was present at his promotional dinner. In 1950, Jansma succeeded Prof. N.W. Posthumus and became a professor of economic and social history at the University of Amsterdam. In 1974 he himself retired.

drs. Hans Janssen

Janssen was a member of the 41st board of the UHSK between 1967 and 1968, just before the Marxist period. Thanks to the joint efforts of the 41st board, the UHSK board medals have been preserved. Hans Janssen has returned the medal to the UHSK and became Honorary member on the 25th of June in 2014 of the UHSK due to proven services.

drs. Rudi van Maanen

Van Maanen was a member of the 41st board of the UHSK between 1967 and 1968, just before the Marxist period. Thanks to the joint efforts of the 41st board, the UHSK board medals have been preserved. Rudi van Maanen donated his medal to the University Museum, he became Honorary member on the 25th of June in 2014 due to proven services.

drs. Wim Lenselink (1947-2018)

Lenselink was a member of the 41st board of the UHSK between 1967 and 1968, just before the Marxist period. Thanks to the joint efforts of the 41st board, the UHSK board medals have been preserved. Wim Lenselink has returned the medal to the UHSK and became Honorary member on the 25th of June in 2014 of the UHSK due to proven services.

drs. Susien Lenselink

Lenselink was a member of the 41st board of the UHSK between 1967 and 1968, just before the Marxist period. Thanks to the joint efforts of the 41st board, the UHSK board medals have been preserved. Susien Lenselink has returned the medal to the UHSK in the year of the sixteenth lustrum and became Honorary member on the 25th of June in 2014 of the UHSK due to proven services.

drs. Hèlen Heskes

Heskes took care of the creation of the UHSK inventory. This archive inventory covers the period of 1926 to 1991. Heskes formed this inventory during her board year (1996-1997) and years later her work was still being discussed. In 2009 it was decided to transfer the work of Heskes to the Utrecht Archives due to the shortage of space in the UHSK room. Since then there have been votes to offer Heskes honorary membership for her dedication. In February 2014, Heskes officially obtained her honorary membership certificate in Café De Stadsgenoot, the previous main pub of the UHSK.

prof. dr. L. J. (Leendert Jan) Dorsman

Dorsman was education director at the Department of History and Art History until 2018 and during this period he was always concerned about his students and especially the UHSK. Without Dorsman's commitment, the relationship between the UHSK and the Department would not have been as strong as it is today. His resignation as Director of Education in 2018 was the reason for granting him honorary membership.
